dc.description.abstract La esterilización de animales domésticos se realiza por diferentes motivos. En algunos casos, para lograr mansedumbre y facilitar el manejo, y en otros casos para mejorar el marmoleo de la carne ya que animales castrados producen más grasa que animales sin castrar. Existe una corriente beneficiosa a nivel mundial con respecto al bienestar animal. Cada vez existe más presión para que los animales que dan alimento a la humanidad no sufran de dolor. Desafortunadamente, la técnica de castración se realiza más comúnmente sin el uso de anestesia. La inmunocastración es una técnica que utiliza un antagonista de la GnRH que bloquea la producción hormonal a nivel de las gónadas. La especie donde se utiliza de forma rutinaria es la porcina. Se maneja un protocolo de dos inyecciones donde la segunda se aplica de cuatro a cinco semanas antes del sacrificio. Las otras especies también se pueden inmunocastrar, pero los productos no se comercializan fácilmente y su uso en bovinos necesita más estudios debido a ser un animal de ciclo largo.
