The main purpose of the research is to determine how a didactic unit on linear equations, based on a virtual mathematical simulator, promotes problem solving in ninth-grade students of the San Francisco el Paki Indigenous Educational Institutions of the Municipalities of Sampués and San Antonio Abad. of Palmito Sucre. In the trajectory of the research process, it was considered to work under a positivist approach and with an explanatory level quantitative research where the student population was considered ninth grade and under a non-probabilistic sampling. The students were selected based on the criteria of the researchers. Both groups were selected pointing to specific characteristics stated by the researchers. The instruments used were a questionnaire specifically about linear equations and three workshops regarding the use of the applied methodology, which consisted of structuring a didactic unit on the subject and supported by a virtual mathematical simulator. The initial and final questionnaires used were the same and they sought to show how much they knew at the beginning of the process of solving contextualized problems and at the end analyze the incidence of the application of a didactic unit about linear equations using technological tools accompanied by a specific methodology. Descriptive statistics and among its elements the relative frequencies were used for the analysis of their results and a triangulation of the responses issued by the students. The general conclusive elements made it possible to address that the use of a didactic unit supported by a virtual mathematical simulator allowed students to develop their mathematical skills in solving linear equations problems. It is recommended to make use of this type of strategies with technological tools in all areas of knowledge.
