DocumentoBilingualism and cognition: analysis of executive function performance in bilingual and monolingual professors and teachers from institutions in Pereira(Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, 2021) Agudelo Londoño, Maria Isabel ; Valencia Cuadros, Yeinson ; Ñañez Arcila, JonathanThis quasi-experimental research sought to determine through a quantitative study if there was an EF advantage in socio-demographically matched bilingual professors relative to their monolingual counterparts, and if there was a mediation or confounding effect on EFs due to the role of SES (socioeconomic status). The data was collected using two tests and one task to quantify each element of the tripartite of the EFs, those materials are: 1) the Stroop test to measure the inhibition component, 2) task switching to measure the shifting component, and 3) the Corsi block-tapping task to measure the updating component. These were used to assess the EF outcomes on bilingual and monolingual professors and teachers from institutions in Pereira. They were filtered beforehand with the help of a sociodemographic language questionnaire to match them as much as possible in terms of their background, so that more accurate results could be gathered, and therefore contribute to the current state of the art. There were two hypotheses that this paper sought to determine experimentally 1) there is a bilingual advantage regarding on of the aspects in the EFs tripartite (inhibition, shifting, or updating), 2) there is a bilingual advantage in the executive function performance as a whole, instead of benefiting just one component, or 3) both groups obtain similar results in the overall of the different tasks and test in the tripartite of the EFs. The contri bution of this paper will be useful to widen the current state of the art in this field in the Colombian context, and it will also help to build a stronger foundation by shedding light on the issue about knowing whether bilingualism affects or not the executive function performance.

DocumentoExecution of co-planning and co-teaching processes based on english for specific purposes at Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje (SENA) centro de diseño e innovación tecnológica industrial in Dosquebradas, Risaralda(Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, 2021) Arévalo Valencia, Leonardo ; Gómez Gutiérrez, Natalia ; Ramírez Marín, Laura María ; Ramos Gallego, DollyThis project corresponds to the modality of the Classroom Project, and it was carried out at the Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje (SENA) Centro de Diseño e Innovación Tecnológica Industrial in Dosquebradas, Risaralda. In view of the institution’s needs, this project aimed at developing co-planning and co-teaching processes alongside the institution’s English instructors. Recent state tests results indicate that, compared to other institutes of similar nature, the SENA presented the largest number of students in the lowest levels of English performance (A1 and A2). We expected to contribute to the SENA’s efforts to meet the objectives set in its Bilingualism Plan, we intended to provide support in the design, materialization, and implementation of English workshops, final exams, and classes through co-planning and co-teaching. Moreover, to foster the communicative competence and the use of technical vocabulary particular to the learners’ field of work, we contributed to the design of new learning guides along with the SENA’s instructors. Furthermore, the expected outcome of this project was to aid future technologists in the process of learning technical language corresponding to their area of expertise and to contribute to the enhancement of SENA’s performance in institutional and national tests. The most significant implication of this project was to work with someone else since it is a challenge and a huge responsibility. This process depended on the prosperous students’ learning and therefore their learning outcomes. Moreover, the feedback given by the instructors was crucial for the practitioners to improve the quality of the class. One fact we can conclude is that there were some external factors that affected the normal development of the functions to perform; however, the alternatives to solve those situations allowed offering several opportunities for both, apprentices and instructors in terms of learning environment, new methodologies, and pedagogical strategies. In the final analysis that was shared in a meeting with all the members involved in this project, they agreed that the practitioners covered the proposed needs successfully.

DocumentoThe Intercultural Approach Reflected by Cultural Entities that Promote English Teaching in Colombia: A Critical Discourse Analysis(Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, 2023) Alzate Londoño, Laura Carolina ; Caicedo Arteaga, Paula Andrea ; González Orozco, Laura Valentina ; Murcia Quintero , DanielCultural exchanges triggered a growing concern about how interculturality should be approached in academic settings by promoting good coexistence among the communities involved. From a critical perspective, cultural interaction should be balanced to avoid one culture overshadowing another (Walsh, 2009). To appreciate whether critical intercultural practices are developed in Colombia, this qualitative study aims to characterize the intercultural approaches that are embedded in the semiotic elements presented on the web pages of cultural entities such as Colombo Americano (CA) and British Council (BC) through a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the methodology proposed by Van Dijk (2000). In the process of analyzing these semiotic elements, researchers also implemented Gee’s toolbox (2011), and Fairclough's CDA model (Durmaz & Yoğun, 2022). The most important findings indicate that the CA reflect a relational interculturality whilst the BC a functional one in the discourse of their web pages. At the same time, it was found that these entities’ power over English teaching in Colombia influences the interculturality that they promote. This research is important to create awareness of how an inclination towards a determined intercultural approach impacts the role that every culture plays in an educational setting. Additionally, it invites to question how some entities introduce interculturality, what is its basis, and for what purposes it is implemented, to notice whether English teaching practices in Colombia are aligned to the cultural needs of this country.

DocumentoSupporting english instruction by implementing co-teaching and co-planning using the esp approach at the sena institution(Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, 2023) Marín Berrío, Isleny ; Olarte Arias, Paulina ; Zapata Vargas, Alejandra ; Ramos Gallego, DollyNowadays, the competition for jobs in Colombia is stricter than ever. Companies require their future employees to have not only extensive professional knowledge but also adequate English skills. The Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje (SENA), an institution that has been training people in technical and technological programs, has responded to the demands of the productive sector by creating a bilingual program that aims to enhance students' competitiveness in the job market. This program targets A2 proficiency for technical programs and B1 proficiency for technologists. Although SENA has applied a bilingual project to assist its learners in achieving the necessary proficiency level, there are still various opportunities for enhancing the methodologies employed in English courses. Based on the aforementioned, the purpose of this project is to support the in-service teachers at SENA in the planning and teaching of English for specific purposes in the intermediate programs of the institution. Thus, co-planning, co-teaching, and the English for Specific Purposes approach were implemented through practices at SENA from the second semester of 2022 to the first semester of 2023 by three undergraduate students of the Bilingualism degree from a public university who assisted SENA learners from various intermediate programs to attain the required proficiency levels. Through the implementation of this project, SENA students enhanced their communicative skills in English for specific working fields, the SENA institution obtained additional support for the development of their bilingual program, and the pre-service teachers gained teaching experience and tools to improve areas such as planning, material design, and lesson organization.
